Nose Ring FAQ

Got a question about nose rings? We've got the answer! Carolyn Stutzman, owner of AlluringBody, tackles your toughest questions and offers advice about every aspect of purchasing and owning a nose ring.

About fit

Q: I'm looking for an L-shaped white gold diamond nose ring. Do you make these?

A: We've found that the majority of our customers prefer the U-shape over the L-shape, so we only carry U-shape screws and straight studs.

Q: I just received my new nose screw today. I tried to put it in, but I can't, and I don't know what to do. I was able to get my original piece back in for now. I think the new one is beautiful, though, and want to wear it. What should I do?

A: Nose screws can be tricky to insert - especially the first time. It sounds like you may need to adjust the new one or have your piercer adjust and insert the nose screw for you.

Q: Has anyone ever complained about a stud getting stuck or not being able to remove it after wearing it for months or years?

A: We get a lot of feedback from our customers, and I can honestly say that we've never had anyone tell us that their nose stud got stuck. A few people have mentioned that it was a little painful inserting and removing the stud, but the vast majority of customers find studs to be very comfortable.

Q: I received my 1.5mm diamond nose stud in the mail last week, and it's beautiful! I have my original nose screw in now and am looking forward to having the gold-set diamond in place. However, I've talked to other people who say that nose studs fall out while they're sleeping or engaged in other activities. I found my old nose screw to be hitting my septum quite a bit and ordered an AlluringBody stud so I wouldn't have that problem. However, I don't want the stud to fall out. I've heard that a nose piercing is one of the quickest piercings to heal up, so will my nose eventually grow tighter around the stud?

A: The bottom line is that everyone's piercing is different, which is why we carry the screw and the stud variations. Feedback from our customers has been very positive regarding our studs. Most people find them really easy to change out and very comfortable to wear. Out of the thousands of studs we've sold, only a few customers have told me that their studs fell out while washing their face or sleeping. I wear a stud and found it to be a tiny bit uncomfortable putting it in because of the pressure. But once I got it in, it was very secure and comfortable. I really love it. So while there are no guarantees, chances are good that you'll be really happy with it. It's also true that your piercing will probably shrink around the stud within a few days and make it more secure. So just be mindful if it's slightly loose initially.

Q: I just purchased a 2mm nose screw and wanted to know if this will work for a left nostril. Other sites seem to be selling right and left nose screws, but I noticed that AlluringBody doesn't.

A: I've seen “left” and “right” nostril nose rings on other sites, too, but it's a gimmick. Ours work in either nostril. My left nostril is pierced, and our nose screws fit me well. I haven't had any customers tell me that they don't work because they're shaped only for one specific nostril.

Choosing the right style

Q: I've had my nose pierced for six months, and I'm finally ready to buy a diamond. My only problem is I don't know which style to purchase. I've heard that nose bones are hard to put in and take out and also that nose screws are uncomfortable. Help - I'm very confused!

A: Nose bones (or studs) are a little more popular than nose screws. The screws can flip around inside the nose and may be seen in the nostril; screws can also be difficult to insert. However, many loyal fans find that they fit really well and don't have problems with them. They are also very secure. Nose studs are very comfortable, but they can occasionally be tough to put in. Some people have a hard time inserting them into the piercing (which can be a little uncomfortable), while others find they are too loose and fall out. Most people, though, like them very much, and they're my personal choice as well. Since everyone's piercing and nose shape is different, it may take a little trial and error to find out what's right for you.

Q: I'm interested in buying both a white gold stud and a yellow gold stud, but I'm not sure about the size. I currently have a tiny one in my nose which I purchased at a local store. I'm torn between a 1mm size and a 1.5mm size. I want something nice and petite with a lot of sparkle - not too big, as I work with the public. Which size would you recommend?

A: I would go with the 1.5mm. The 1mm is pretty tiny and flashes a little sparkle occasionally. The 1.5mm is more of a “standard size” and is our most popular for good reason: it's still small, but it gives off lots of sparkle.

Q: I was looking at the 1.5mm prong-set diamond nose screw in white gold. Do you sell this same nose screw in the 1mm size?

A: The smallest prong-set diamond we carry is the 1.5mm. The 1.5mm is still pretty small, so I think you'll be happy with it. The reason we don't sell a 1mm version is that all of our diamonds are set - not glued - and it wouldn't make sense to set a 1mm diamond in prongs because the prongs would overwhelm the diamond.

Q: I'm trying to decide between the prong and bezel settings. Which lays the most flush with the nose? Does the bezel setting sit flat, or would you recommend the prong setting? Also, which sparkles the most?

A: The bezel setting lays flatter on the nose than the prong setting. Since these are real diamonds and not decals, they do have a little height to them. Our 1mm is practically flush with the nose, and the 1.5mm lays flat as well. The larger stones sit a little higher than the smaller ones, so I would stick to the smaller sizes if you want a subtle look.

Q: Can you help me decide which nose stud will sit the flattest on the nose?

A: We set all of our diamonds to lay as flat as possible, but if you're looking for the flattest style, I would go with the 1mm or 1.5mm diamond nose studs. Basically, the smaller the stone, the flatter it will lay. And the bezel settings are flatter than prong settings.

Q: I'm interested in the 1mm gold diamond nose screw. Can you tell me what the “1mm” refers to? Is that the width of the diamond or the entire piece?

A: 1mm refers to the diameter of the diamond. The setting adds about .5mm more width.

Other questions

Q: How does 20-gauge translate to millimeter width?

A: 20-gauge is about .08mm.

Q: I'm interested in purchasing a 20-gauge diamond nose stud from AlluringBody. But would a piercing store be able to pierce my nose with a nose stud, or does it have to be a nose screw?

A: Personally, my piercer wanted to use a screw. The only way to know for sure is to contact the place where you'll be getting the piercing and ask them. Every place has its own policies.

Q: Regarding the standard length of your studs, do you receive many requests for a shorter length? I have a very thin nose, and I don't want the stud to be poking the inside of my nose.

A: The studs that we carry fit almost everyone. As a result, we get very few requests for custom lengths.
